Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


Main purpose of job:


This role will sit within the British Embassy's Economic, Climate and Science team (ECS) and the successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the team's work across a wide portfolio of work in climate and nature.


In parallel, the jobholder will provide support for official visits and events, including programme design, meeting arrangements, financial processes, and with guidance and support from their line manager and the head of the ECS team, will represent the UK embassy objectives with key stakeholders in the public, private and third sector.


Roles and responsibilities:

Support to the Embassy's Environmental Policy team (60%)

  • Support the Environmental Policy Lead /Head of Oceans and Biodiversity and the Biodiversity and Oceans Officer to deliver the biodiversity and oceans portfolio, and in particular the oceans programmes and initiatives to tackle illegal wildlife trade.
  • Support for team activities. This includes organisation, planning and delivery of events and official visits, as well as the development of communication products. The jobholder will be expected to manage a number of small projects under the Embassy's GREAT campaign on sustainability. Themes will include sustainable fashion, IWT and environmental education.
  • Building and maintaining relations with key government and private sector stakeholders at different levels and identifying opportunities in the nature and climate agendas.
  • Actively participate in meetings and briefings of relevance to the role.
ECS comms and Partnership support (30%)

  • Support the communications strategy for the Embassy's Economic, Climate and Science team and wider delivery of the UK-COL Partnership for Sustainable Growth, including identifying synergies and opportunities to integrate the work of other embassy teams.
Corporate work (10%)

  • Actively engage in wider Embassy activities, participate in committees and events.
  • Identify and attend opportunities to improve existing skills and/or develop new ones.
  • Fulfil requirements of performance appraisal process, including drafting a personal development plan.
  • Reporting on spending related to ECS budget and monitoring of programme spending.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience


Essential on arrival:


  • At least two years of professional experience in a related field such as the environment and sustainable development, in particular biodiversity conservation and sustainable consumption and production practices. Experience in organizing events and engaging with government officials and the private sector.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (written and spoken).
  • An ability to develop, maintain and work through a strong network of contacts to deliver results.
  • A proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently in public, and with contacts at different levels.
  • Strong judgement and problemsolving skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and prioritise in order to achieve objectives.
  • Proficient user of MS Office.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience


Desirable:


  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) on International Relations, environmental management or similar.
  • Knowledge and interest in international negotiations on climate and biodiversity.
  • Track record of building effective relationships with private and public sector contacts.
  • Experience of working with or in the UK.
  • Administrative and logistics experience.
